Trazado Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Maipo Valley, Chile
Cost: $24.99/bottle

On my way to the checkout counter at my local wine shop, I came across this in the “featured” aisle— with a sign expressing that this is Chile’s version of a cult wine. At $24.99… hmmm. Okay, I’ll bite. Cult wines in Napa Valley go for $150 and up— and in France (à la St. Emilion), north of $200. So, for a price of $24.99, this one is worth a shot.
And, oh my. Ample blue and black berries with shaved toasted oak, coconut shavings, and vanilla crème— pretty alluring. In the mouth, a huge fruit bomb, full-bodied, velvety and rich with formidable tannins (with enough fruit to overcome). Interesting and very seductive on both the nose and palate. Definitely worth looking into. I plan on going back to the shop for a 2 wooden cases (12 bottles). Yes, it’s that good!

Trimbach Riesling 2006, Alsace, France
Cost: $11.99/half bottle

Dry white— very pale white pewter color, with notes of ripe pear and licorice. Quite crisp, light and just a touch too dry, revealing less fruit than I would have preferred in a Riesling (granted, a young French Riesling, but still). Fine wine for serving chilled on a summer evening. Priced accordingly.
